Why is Summer Reading Important?
Children who don't read over the summer experience summer learning loss. That's right -- kids don't just feel like they've forgotten some of what they've learned -- they actually do forget it. And the effect is cumulative. Kids who lose reading skills over the summer will be two years behind their classmates by the end of 6th grade. Summer reading kids can prevent this from happening by encouraging kids to read whatever they want, which helps instill a love of reading for recreation. Studies show that kids who read for fun often out-perform kids who don't in school.

This summer, we would like to extend a summer reading opportunity to our Crissman Students.

This summer, we are encouraging all of our students to read 1000 minutes. This amounts to 20 minutes of reading 5 nights a week.  As you read this summer, complete the reading log below. Return your completed log  to Mrs. Conley in the Media the first week of school in September.  This will enter you into raffle where you can win a gift card from:

Toys R Us
Game Stop
Barnes and Noble

to name a few.

The reading log to complete is below

In addition, below are some fantastic summer packets that contain some great reading skills to help eliminate that "summer slide".  These may also be turned in to earn a raffle ticket.

THESE ARE "MOVING UP" Packets, so you would be choosing the packet of the grade your child is moving up to.
